If, like me, you were a teenager in the 90’s you probably remember Oasis v Blur, Euro ’96, the Britpop invasion and probably the last era of having to try and find music before it all got so much easier with the internet.
One of the things I remember most was sitting in front of the TV every Friday night at 6 and seeing who was going to be on TFI Friday. Starting in February ’96 and running until December 2000, TFI Friday was a favourite for many wanting to hear from their favourite bands as well as film and TV Stars.
The familiar intro of Ocean Colour Scene’s ‘Riverboat Sog’ became synonymous with the show as it accompanied the guests walking along the walkway, through the bar and up to Chris Evans.
There were so many great bands and performances along the way including the infamous Shaun Ryder whose appearances alongside Black Grape go down in history as some of the most disastrous from a C4 point of view but entertaining for the viewers. Because of this Shaun Ryder is the only person names in the Channel 4 guidebook as being banned from live performances.
Having a reputation of attracting some of the biggest stars of the day the return of TFI Friday on June 12th at 9:00 on Channel 4 looks to be going the same way having already confirmed Roger Daltrey, Mani, Ian Broudie, Zac Starkey, Rudimental Blur and Liam Gallagher.
Having read through Chris Evans tweets this morning it looks like the Riverboat Song will still feature and It’s Your Letters could be making an appearance alongside Freak or Unique. I’m just hoping the incredibly tall old lady will still be about. To keep up to date follow the @TFIFridayLIVE or Chris Evans account account over on Twitter.
